Thomas Wood’s London (Middlesex) copper halfpenny token dated 1811. Obverse: Legend on fourteen lines in centre and round periphery: “THOMAS WOOD. BROKER, AUCTIONEER & GENERAL AGENT. SALES OF ESTATES, HOUSES, MANUFACTURED GOODS, AND MISCELLANEOUS PROPERTY, SPEEDILY EFFECTED WITHOUT RISK. PUBLIC AUCTIONS EVERY DAY AT 12. PRIVATE ORDERS FOR ALL KINDS OF GOODS PUNCTUALLY EXECUTED.”. Reverse: A view of a Georgian building, presumably his premises, with a sign outside reading: “NEW AUCTION MART”, with legend: “PAYABLE AT THE OLD STOCK EXCHANGE IN BANK NOTES – ESTABLISHED 1811 – HALFPENNY”. Centre grained edge. Thomas Wood was an auctioneer with business rooms in the Old Stock Exchange at the corner of Swithin's Alley, close to the north-east corner of the Royal Exchange, London. He was declared bankrupt in 1813 and the building burned down in 1816. Nice collectable condition, possibly cleaned in the past and now toning out, small reverse flan flaw, see photograph.
